Students need to clear the Class-12 examinations, with physics, chemistry and mathematics, to be eligible for admission to the various engineering colleges. Candidates can compete at an All India level for admission in the various state level colleges. Although seats in the state level colleges are reserved for students within that state’s domicile, one can apply for seats that are available for students of other states.
All engineering institutes require students to appear and clear an All India entrance exam in the subject as well. There are two national level examinations for engineering entrance.
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE): Through this examination, Students can get admissions to the seven Indian Institutes of technology (IIT’s), the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad, the Institute of Technology at Benaras Hindu University, and even the merchant navy course at TS Chanakya and the Marine Engineering Institute at Kolkata.
All India Engineering/ Architecture Entrance Examination (AIEEE): Students can get admissions to the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), deemed universities, technical institutes and other government –funded institutions through this examination. After the written test, a centralized government counseling session is organized to fill the All India Seats.
Apart from these two prominent national level examinations, students can also appear for the State level engineering entrance examinations of individual states for admission into the institutions in that particular state.
