Graphic designing is the art and profession of selecting and arranging visual elements such as typography, images, symbols and colours to convey a massage to an audience. At times, graphic designing is also referred to as visual convey a message to an audience. At times, graphic designing is also referred to as “visual communications.�

A graphic designer produces visual solutions to the communication needs of clients by using a mix of creative skills and commercial awareness. As such, designers need imaginative flair, a grasp of current fashions in the visual arts, working knowledge of the latest computer packages and an understanding of material costs an time limits, all of which can have an impact on the design.

Graphic designers create the visual components of various types of media, including TV, Flim, Movies, Magaziners, Written material and even advertising. One can pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) course, which provides a sound grounding in creative arts, and follow it up with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program, NID offers a graduate diploma program and postgraduate diploma in design with graphic designing as the specialization. There are several short-term diplomas and certificate courses  in graphic designing to choose from as well.

The graduate diploma program at NID, Ahmedabad is for four years while the postgraduate program is for 2- 2.5 years. The duration of different courses at other private institutes is for a span of few months. The bachelor of Fine arts (BEA) program is generally for a period of four years.

The national institute of Design (NID) is one of the premier institutes of design in India. And imparts word-class design education both at the undergraduate and the postgraduate level. The BFA course is provided by a number of universities in India. Jamia Millia Islmia is another top institute in India that provides BFA and MFA programs. Computer training institutes such as Arena Animation Centre offer six-month programs on graphic designing, as do a number of other private training centers.

Graphic designers are in high demand and are used to design almost everything form interior spaces to books covers. While many graphic designers work for large publications or media agencies, others work independently on a project- by – project basis. Publications such as Hindustan Times and Times of India, publishing houses like Thomson press, event management organizations, graphic design  firms, advertising agencies, News channels like Aaj Tak, NDTV, fashion houses and web designing firms all require the services of graphic designers. There are several opportunities in the ever- expanding computer games field as well. 

In a typical advertising agency, graphic designers start out as visualizes, and can be promoted to the level of senior visualizes in a year or so. After a span of three years in the agency, they can move on to become art directors, and within five years, they can become senior art directors or creative supervisors.

The next level is that of a group head or creative head. After eight to nine years experience, one can become an associate creative director, and in a few more years, become the creative director.
